Milwaukee residents attend RNC community listening session, many leave with questions about security

The Republican National Convention (RNC) is scheduled to take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from August 24 to 27, 2020. In preparation for this major political event, city officials held a community listening session on Thursday, July 16, 2020, to provide updates on security measures and address concerns from local residents.

During the session, Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales and other city officials shared information about the extensive security plan that has been put in place to ensure the safety of attendees, residents, and protesters. Here are some key points from the presentation:

1. Fencing and barricades: The city will install fencing and barricades around the convention site and nearby areas to control access and maintain order. The perimeter will include a "secure zone" where only credentialed individuals will be allowed.

2. Thousands of law enforcement officers: More than 5,000 law enforcement officers from various jurisdictions will be deployed during the convention to maintain order and respond to any incidents. This includes local, state, and federal agencies.

3. Aerial surveillance: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted temporary flight restrictions over the convention site to prevent unauthorized drones and helicopters from flying in the area.

4. Communication and coordination: A unified command center has been established to facilitate communication and coordination among law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders during the convention.

5. Protester area: A designated protest area has been established near the convention site to accommodate peaceful demonstrations.

6. Transportation: The city will implement various transportation measures to accommodate attendees and minimize traffic disruptions. This includes shuttle buses and increased public transportation services.

7. Medical services: On-site medical services will be available to address any medical emergencies that may occur during the convention.

Despite these assurances, some residents left the session with lingering concerns and questions. These included:

1. Cost: Some residents expressed frustration over the financial burden that the convention will place on taxpayers and questioned why Milwaukee was chosen as the host city when other cities had declined the opportunity.

2. Protests: While the designated protest area was mentioned, some residents wanted more information about how protests would be managed and what measures would be taken to prevent violence or property damage.

3. Access to businesses and residences: Residents living and working near the convention site were concerned about how they would be able to access their properties during the event and whether they would be subject to increased security checks or restrictions.

4. Impact on small businesses: Small business owners near the convention site were worried about potential disruptions to their businesses due to increased security measures and potential protests.

5. COVID-19 precautions: With the ongoing pandemic, some residents wanted to know how social distancing and other COVID-19 safety measures would be enforced during the convention.

City officials promised to continue engaging with the community and providing updates as more information becomes available. They encouraged residents to sign up for convention-related email updates and to contact their alderpersons or other city representatives with any specific concerns or questions.
