In the latest episode of TNT's "Inside the NBA," Charles Barkley made headlines with his analysis of the Chicago Bulls' victory over the Detroit Pistons, which secured them the 9th seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs and a home-court advantage in the play-in tournament. The Bulls' volatile season, marked by injuries and inconsistent performances, came as a surprise to many, including Barkley, who had previously criticized the team's chances of making the playoffs.
During the post-game discussion, Barkley couldn't contain his amusement at the sight of Andre Drummond, who was ejected from the game after receiving two technical fouls in quick succession. Barkley, known for his candid and often humorous commentary, couldn't resist taking a jab at the center, saying, "Andre Drummond, you're out of the playoffs, buddy. You're done."
Despite his earlier skepticism, Barkley has now expressed his interest in covering the Bulls' potential playoff run, given their unexpected success. In an interview with ESPN's "Get Up!" on Tuesday, he shared his thoughts on the team's turnaround and expressed his excitement about their prospects in the postseason.
Barkley acknowledged that the Bulls' success was largely due to their young talent, such as DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, and Nikola Vucevic, who have stepped up in the absence of injured players like Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso. He also praised their coach, Billy Donovan, for his ability to adapt and keep the team focused despite the challenges they faced this season.
However, Barkley had one request for NBA Commissioner Adam Silver regarding the play-in tournament format. He suggested that the league consider allowing more fans in the arena to create a more authentic playoff atmosphere, given that the Bulls will be playing their first-round opponent, the Miami Heat, in front of a live audience.
Barkley's request is not without precedent, as other major sports leagues, such as Major League Baseball and the National Football League, have allowed limited fan attendance during their respective playoffs this year. The NBA, however, has yet to announce any plans to change its current policy of no fans in attendance for playoff games.
Despite this, Barkley remains optimistic about the Bulls' chances in the playoffs and is looking forward to covering their games in his role as an NBA analyst for TNT. The first-round series between the Bulls and Heat is set to begin on Saturday, April 16, with Game 1 taking place at the United Center in Chicago.
