Shaman cleared of fraud after charging W100m for 'exorcism'

The case involving a South Korean shaman, identified as Kim, who was accused of committing fraud for charging two individuals a total of approximately 100 million won or around $74,000 for performing exorcisms, has recently been dismissed by the local court. The incident took place in March of the previous year.

According to the reports, Kim diagnosed one of the individuals, surnamed Hong, with an illness caused by ghost possession. Hong approached Kim seeking help and was advised that the shaman could perform exorcism rituals to alleviate the issue. Kim then requested the substantial sum of money from Hong in exchange for her services.

The payment made to Kim amounted to around 79.3 million won or approximately $62,500. Another individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, also paid Kim a similar amount for similar services.

However, the case took an unexpected turn when Hong and the second individual filed a complaint against Kim, alleging that she had committed fraud. They argued that Kim had not provided any tangible results or relief from their supposed afflictions despite the significant financial investment.

The local court, however, ruled in favor of the defendant. The court determined that Kim's actions were not necessarily fraudulent but rather a part of her religious practices as a shaman. The court stated that the desired result of the exorcism rituals was not guaranteed and that the belief in the efficacy of such practices is deeply rooted in the Korean culture and tradition.
