Karnataka Legislative Council Elections news update Voting underway today

The Karnataka Legislative Council elections are currently underway on Monday, February 28, 2022, for six vacant seats in the upper house of the Karnataka State Legislature. The elections are being held for the graduates' and teachers' constituencies.

The graduates' constituency consists of graduates from various fields, including arts, science, commerce, and professional courses, who are permanent residents of Karnataka state. The teachers' constituency, on the other hand, comprises teachers who are employed in recognized educational institutions within the state.

The voting process for these elections began at 8:00 am and will continue until 5:00 pm. The elections are being conducted through the secret ballot system, ensuring the privacy of each voter's choice. The counting of votes will take place on March 4, 2022, and the results are expected to be announced shortly thereafter.

A total of 12,121 voters are eligible to cast their ballots in the graduates' constituency, while 1,10,533 voters are eligible to vote in the teachers' constituency. The nomination process for these elections took place between January 25 and January 31, 2022, and a total of 23 candidates contested for the graduates' constituency, while 117 candidates contested for the teachers' constituency.

The Karnataka Legislative Council, also known as the Vidhan Parishad, has a total of 75 members, out of which 30 are elected through direct elections from various constituencies, while 45 members are nominated by the Governor of Karnataka based on their expertise in various fields. The term of office for a member of the Legislative Council is six years, with one-third of the members retiring every two years.

These elections are crucial as they will determine the composition of the upper house of the Karnataka State Legislature, which plays a significant role in various legislative processes, including the passage of bills, approval of the state budget, and scrutiny of the actions of the lower house of the legislature, the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
